Two June Events: North Fork Rosé Crawl; Toast Dad at Sparkling Pointe

June is a beautiful time on the North Fork. The weather’s great, the crowds not crazy, the event calendar packed. Here are two more to keep in mind:

Saturday June 10–National Rosé Day–take a self-guided tour around four premier North Fork wineries: Martha Clara Vineyards, Lenz, Bridge Lane and Osprey’s Dominion. Each offers tastes of rosé and special rosé-themed treats. Cap the night with Italian opera, Italian food and wine at Laurel Lake Vineyards.

Sunday June 18 Celebrate Dad with a Sparkling Pointe BBQ. This delicious event joins the list of Yay Dad! options that will keep growing in the weeks ahead.

May 27: VSOP Projects Grand Opening

The inaugural exhibition includes the works of over 20 artists, including celebrated British furniture maker Katie Walker; sculptor, photographer and performance artist Charley Friedman; Copenhagen-based painter Line Busch; Istanbul/New York photographer Devin Yalkin; Brooklyn’s Bower design studio; and the late ceramic master Don Reitz. Several of the participating artists are being shown here for the first time in the United States. Opening Reception from 6-10 pm. Details.

May 28: Rites of Spring II: Classical Music & Historic House Tour by the Arcanum String Quartet

Four music performances in four historical houses in collaboration with Oysterponds, Stirling and Southold Historical Societies. For one day, the doors of East End of Long Island’s most beautiful historic houses will be open while offering an extraordinary opportunity to experience live classical music in collaboration with the Arcanum String Quartet performing Death and the Maiden by Franz Schubert. Includes Wine, Cheese and Chocolate Reception at Poquatuck Hall in Orient with Laurel Lake Vineyards and North Fork Chocolate Company. Noon-5 pm. Details.

May 28: Lighthouse Cruise

This 3-hour lighthouse experience includes: up-close viewing of 4 lighthouses, cruise by 5 islands and a seal search. 4-7 pm. Details.

June 2: Greenport Gallery Walk

Greenport has several stunning galleries, all in an easy stroll. Check out the art, enjoy a snack, wander the village, get dinner. 6-9 pm. Details.

June 3: Rites of Spring II: Thought Experiments Under the Stars at Custer Observatory by Brian Smith & the Hidden City Orchestra

Music Notation/Astronomical Notation Exhibition, followed by nocturnal observatory star gazing. An after-concert reception will be held for the audience in collaboration with North Fork Chocolate Company and Laurel Lake Vineyards. 7 pm. June 4: Rites of Spring II:  Quogue Nocturne at Quogue Wildlife Refuge by Cliff Baldwin & ACME

Quogue Nocturne is a live concert by the Aquebogue Contemporary Music Ensemble featuring the sounds of the natural environment and live performers. Quogue Nocturne is an electroacoustic soundscape of water, birds, flora and fauna all sourced locally. The ensemble will mix field recordings made by the composer in Aquebogue, Chiang Mai, Thailand and Quogue along with live performers. Sounds from owls, frogs, crickets from the East End and Southeast Asia will mesh with sounds of our immediate environment. A pre-Concert Conversation at 4:30pm features a presentation with live owls and a conversation with East End Naturalists and the Composer.  An after-Concert Wild Food Reception features refreshments from Early Girl Farm and Laurel Lake Vineyards. 5 pm. Details.

 
June 10: Rites of Spring II: Opera Night Concert at Laurel Lake Vineyards by Masha Carrera & Paolo Bartolani

After the extraordinary successful music performance last spring, the soprano Masha Carrera is back by popular demand. Enjoy a special music evening with a mesmerizing performance of Mediterranean Lyrical Songs by de Falla, Bizet, Ravel and Neapolitan songs. The evening will be enriched with Mediterranean Table Food and Wine Session (assortments of delicious antipasti, hors d’oeuvres, traditional sweets and one glass of wine), in collaboration with Laurel Lake Vineyards and North Fork Chocolate Company. 7 pm. Details.

June 15-18 The 63rd Strawberry Festival

Long Island’s Original and Largest Strawberry Festival and Charity Fund Raiser. A huge range of carnival rides, all the midway games and treats from funnel cakes and cotton candy to chocolate dipped strawberries. Live music and quality vendors too. July 9: Sylvester Manor Concert: Jim Hurst Trio

Jim Hurst is a guitar veteran, known for his live performances, recorded music and tours with several, well-known Country and Bluegrass bands. Jim has received IBMA’s ‘Guitar Player of the Year’ Award twice, and was nominated in 2015 and again this year, 2016. He is lauded by his peers and fans for his combination style of finger-style and flat-pick on guitar. Another Sylvester Manor “house concert alum” Jim will return with bassist Erik Alvar and fiddler/mandolinist Nate Lee. The trio first performed as part of ‘Bluegrass and Beyond’ in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Ford Theater in 2015 and returned again this past November. August 13:  The Barefoot Movement

Heralded by CMT Edge as “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene” the music of this Nashville based group is as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back, take your shoes off and stay awhile!  All the worries and frustrations of the world melt away as this charming acoustic band takes listeners back to a simpler place and time.  The Barefoot Movement was here for a house concert in 2015, and we can’t wait for their return to the summer stage! Sylvester Manor, Creekside 7-10 pm. Details.

August 19: Lenz Winery: 9th Annual Dinner in the Vines

September 16: Sylvester Manor Concert: Solas

It can be convincingly argued that no band has done more than Solas to prove that celtic music today is truly a universal musical language, like jazz, classical, rock or bluegrass.  The band’s sound is explosive yet seductively personal – timelessly melodic yet rippling with modern muscle.  Founding members Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan along with Moira Smiley, the vocalist who knocked us out here last September performing with Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project, front this five-piece band that the Boston Globe has called “ the finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced.” This final concert will have an added bonus, a contradance in the tradition of “Plant and Sing”, featuring Ed Howe & Bennett Konesni’s band Drive Train! Sylvester Manor, Creekside. 5-10 pm  Details.
