The Maritime Festival in Greenport: Sept. 23-24 (Land & Sea 9/22)

The July 12 Update

For most of the last three decades, Greenport’s East End Seaport Museum & Maritime Foundation has organized the fabulous Maritime Festival. Tens of thousands come for the weekend, so be sure to plan your stay soon.

Why so many people? Well, the basic fun includes classic, ice and small boats; fireboat tours; cruises; live music; food, wine & beer tastings; Village of Greenport shops & restaurants; vendors; craft and nautical demonstrations; the Carousel; Stirling Historical Society; Blacksmith Shop; Seaport Museum; Railroad Museum; and the very cool Camera Obscura. Add in pirates, shipwreck artifacts, a merfolk costume contest, flyboards, a snapper fishing contest, and more, and you start to get the picture. Saturday Details and Sunday Details.

The night before is the Land and Sea Gala to support the East End Seaport Museum, without which there would not be a Festival. The Gala features wonderful food and drink & much more. Check out pictures here.

July 20: East End Seaport Museum: Chef Noah Schwartz

We’re excited. And we’re hungry. Executive Chef Noah Schwartz, a native Long Islander and New England Culinary Institute alum, will be wowing us with an evening of culinary treats. The New York Times called him a “wizard in the kitchen.” We call him a friend to the Seaport Museum and one of Greenport’s most popular assets. Light Refreshments. 5:30-7:30 pm. Details.

July 20: Tribute Thursdays

Claudio’s honors the late Jerry Tuthill, co-owner of the Claudio’s establishments, with weekly concerts featuring the Northeast’s greatest tribute bands. Parrot Beach Group (Jimmy Buffet tribute) The show runs 8-11 pm. 21+ yrs old only. Details.

July 22: Sparkling Pointe: 8th Annual Carnaval

Authentically Brazilian, it features Samba Novo, a performance of Brazilian drummers, dancers and Samba queens. Tickets (at the door only) include a glass of sparkling and a keepsake flute, additional sparkling and food pairings on offer. 1-6 pm. Details.

July 22:  Jamesport Vineyards: Jazz in the Vines

World class jazz pianist and composer Alex Bugnon with special guest Marc Antoine, contemporary jazz fusion guitarist with a multi-cultural urban groove kicks off the live music season at Jamesport Vineyards. Tickets must be purchased in advance. 7 pm. Details.

July 26: East End Seaport Museum: An Evening of Past and Present Music of the Sea

The Jolly Tars will dramatically recreate the music of the golden age of sail with their performance at the Seaport Museum. Their presentation features rousing chanteys, pensive ballads and lively clawhammer banjo. The program will be liberally seasoned with anecdotes of the life and times of 19th century sailors and their ships. Accompanied by Jake’s clawhammer banjo and Ken’s guitar playing, the Tars’ rousing and poignant vocals are complemented by harmonica, whistle, banjo-ukulele, percussion instruments and piano. The Tars’ look and sound will transport the audience back to the days of wooden ships and iron men. Light Refreshments. 5:30-7:30 pm. Details.

July 29: Barn Dance Fundraiser for Hallockville Museum Farm

Enjoy live traditional music and learn the dance steps from caller Chart Guthrie in the historic Naugles Barn! No experience needed- all ages are invited to this summer tradition and annual fundraiser for the not-for-profit museum. Food truck and beverages will be available for cash purchase. The North Fork has very deep agricultural roots, with many of the original colonists’ families still farming here. Hallockville Museum Farm gives a peek into that history, while offering programing throughout the year that teach not only history but also classic skills and crafts. So have fun and invest in the ways of the North Fork. 6:30-9 pm. Details.

Northeast Stage performs Shakespeare in Mitchell Park: The Comedy of Errors.  Details.

August 3: East End Seaport Museum: Long Island Sound Steamboats, 1800-1945

Mr. Brouwer’s talk will cover the era of steamboats on Long Island Sound, from beginnings in the early 1800s to the final days around World War II.  The overnight steamboats on the Sound were some of the largest and grandest such boats the world has seen.  Local services will also be covered, including points on Long Island’s North Shore, cross Sound services, excursions, and efforts to establish rail and steamboat services between New York and Boston by way of Long Island.  Prominent individuals involved include Cornelius Vanderbilt, and “Admiral’ Jim Fisk.  This will be a power point presentation illustrated with historic photographs, prints and paintings. August 10: East End Seaport Museum: Greenport: The Right Place at the Wrong Time

“Greenport: The Right Place at the Wrong Time” is a historical tale by author Roselle Borrelli. It is a story about a house, a family, a builder, and some of the people who lived in the village of Greenport from approximately 1830s to early 1900s. It is a true historical account of the happenings in Greenport and tells a tale of odd occurrences, leads, and coincidences that will have you convinced there might just be something else going on than that which meets the eye. Heralded by CMT Edge as “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene” the music of this Nashville based group is as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back, take your shoes off and stay awhile!  All the worries and frustrations of the world melt away as this charming acoustic band takes listeners back to a simpler place and time.  The Barefoot Movement was here for a house concert in 2015, and we can’t wait for their return to the summer stage! Sylvester Manor, Creekside 7-10 pm. Details.

Anders Langendal & Sons’ main focus is major restoration and repair of both wooden and fiberglass boats, with a specialty in marine woodworking. September 16: Sylvester Manor Concert: Solas

It can be convincingly argued that no band has done more than Solas to prove that celtic music today is truly a universal musical language, like jazz, classical, rock or bluegrass.  The band’s sound is explosive yet seductively personal – timelessly melodic yet rippling with modern muscle.  Founding members Seamus Egan and Winifred Horan along with Moira Smiley, the vocalist who knocked us out here last September performing with Jayme Stone’s Lomax Project, front this five-piece band that the Boston Globe has called “ the finest Celtic ensemble this country has ever produced.” This final concert will have an added bonus, a contradance in the tradition of “Plant and Sing”, featuring Ed Howe & Bennett Konesni’s band Drive Train! Sylvester Manor, Creekside. 5-10 pm  Details.
