Last Week In Pictures

Scenes from the North Fork

By

One of the glorious ways to spend your days here is at the beach, as the cover sunset July 4th picture shows. Another fun one this weekend was to attend the annual Southold Town Fourth of July Parade, as these photos from Patch show, and these from the Suffolk Times. Another fun, smaller scale community joy was Heritage Day out in Orient. Again, Patch has the pictures, while the Suffolk Times has the pictures of…

The Rites of Spring Ends with a Stunning & Sexy Performance

By

Saturday night, the second year of the Rites of Spring ended with its eighth concert: the incomparable soprano Masha Carrera sang Spanish, French and Italian songs, accompanied by Paolo Bartolani on a gorgeous Steinway & Sons piano. One not-to-be-missed moment was her captivating performance of Erik Satie’s Je te veux. (I want you). The pics of her singing are from that song. The picture of the view is what you see from the deck of…

The North Fork at Play: Diving Dogs and Young Pianists

By

The North Fork is such a beautiful, relaxed place you can be close to a festival of swimming dogs, dog groups, and beer and have no real idea except for tents on the horizon: (The parking at the Brewery was full, so people walked a couple of blocks to the parking lot of the Recreation Center, and this part of a vineyard was in between.) The parking lot was full because people and their dogs…

May Flowers & Love Lane Strolling

By

The North Fork is best experienced at a stroll, so you can stop and smell the flowers, or at least admire them. A very nice place to stroll is Mattituck’s Love Lane, now expanded at the cross roads to Pike Street. A particularly nice time to stroll Love Lane is the First Friday of every month in season when the street puts on a block party until 9 or so, featuring live music, food and…

Our April showers have indeed been bringing out the Mayflowers (and string bean plants too–that’s what’s bursting from the ground in the cover shot.) Flowers are everywhere; on bushes: and on weeds: In ground cover: and on trees: And of course there’s planted flowers everywhere! Residents, shops, community institutions love to keep their grounds beautiful.  Share:

Astronomy Day 2017

By

Custer Institute, the oldest public observatory on Long Island, is a local treasure. And each spring, it stages a treat: Astronomy Day. Some of the fun is straight Astronomy, from observing at telescopes and weighing yourself on other planets and walking a scale model of the solar system on the grounds. Other parts were just fun, like bouncy houses and turtles and nocturnal creatures: The Sun that set the scale–1/16th inch = 2,000 miles Mercury…
